It's been a big week for Scampers. We're juggling lots of work and deliveries at our Bel-Red construction site, while we're keeping our Kirkland campers busy and dry despite the onset of Autumn showers.

We've been celebrating our 6th Anniversary Week plus all the fun and excitement of preparing to expand to our new location.

At the same time, however, we've had to say tearful goodbyes to two of our campers, one being our beloved founder dog, Rosie. Their stories are below.
 
 
 
 
Tapeworms! - Flea Prevention Reminder
We've seen a sudden flurry of pooches with symptoms of tapeworms in the last couple of weeks.

Tapeworms are NOT contagious from dog to dog. The only way for a dog to contract tapeworms is to swallow a flea that is infected with tapeworms, so that tells us that there are dogs who have been missing their flea prevention programs.
Flea season is year-'round here in the Pacific Northwest, and those little beasties thrive in the moist grassy areas like dog parks and wooded trails in the area. The best way to make sure your pooch doesn't end up with a tapeworm, and you don't end up with a flea infestation, is to keep up with those flea treatments!

By the way, when we find evidence of worms in poop (we look at every poop we pick up!), we give the client a sample of that poop with the evidence of the tapeworm for testing and treatment at the veterinary clinic.

Unfortunately, these tests will very often result in false negatives (one of our veterinarian customers says only 1 in 5 fecal float tests will be effective for testing for tapeworms). Please insist that your veterinarian perform a thorough visual test to look for the worm segments rather than performing a fecal float test, to avoid a false-negative test result caused by the tapeworm eggs dissolving.

Treatment is simple - a deworming drug is administered (tablet or injection) which dissolves the tapeworm. And prevention is simple too - dogs who don't have fleas don't get tapeworms!

We're a pretty close knit group of pooches - we form strong friendships, and we get to know each other very well. When new pooches join us, we love to introduce them around and get them started in their Scampering adventures - that's why they call us the "Welcome Waggin".
 
 
 
Our Welcome Waggin team has had a fun week welcoming the newbies.
 
 
 
Nala E joined us on Monday morning. She's a joyful Rottie pup with a great attitude. All the other pups are thrilled to have her join in the fun wrasslin' games.

On Tuesday, Bonny Boxer joined the ranks. She's got some years on her, but she's wearing them well, and she knows how to have a fine time with good friends.

Patrone was our Wednesday newbie. He settled in well, enjoying all the raucous Littles.

Toppy came to share in the fun on Thursday. While she has some health challenges, she seems to enjoy being with a whole bunch of pleasant pooches. She generously shared First Day billing with pretty Lucy the pure white Shiba Inu. We made sure they both felt welcomed and comfy, and look forward to sharing time with them again soon.

Today, we're welcoming Big Cooper D, a golden youngster with a heart for partying. We look forward to sharing lots of time with him. At the same time, we're introducing shy girl Tilly Lab to the Scampers world. We'll make sure she feels right at home right away.

In Memorium - Rosie, Scampers Founder PoochAnchor
 
 
 
 
We are so very sorry to have to announce that our founder dog, Rosie, has made her way to the Rainbow Bridge after her long battle with cancer.

Thirteen years ago, as a family with an only child, we decided to add a dog to our household, and attended an adoption “meet & greet” at the local pet store. A skittish and delicate Beagle, Rosie had been rescued from a kill shelter in West Virginia, and as she sought a quiet place in all the pandemonium, she found her way to us. She was so timid and scared, I couldn’t resist comforting her. She peed on the floor out of abject fear and it was LOVE at first sight! As my husband and daughter cleaned up the pee spot, we continued to bond with her well away from the bru-ha-ha. We all knew immediately that Rosie was meant to be our dog.
 
 

There are so many ways that Rosie helped shape the direction of our lives, the most significant being the way she reconnected us to our love of animals, dogs in particular. In fact, it was Rosie who was the inspiration for Scampers Daycamp for Dogs where she flourished, spending so much of her time enjoying all her many friends, human and canine.

We are so grateful for all the years Rosie shared with us and made us smile and laugh and love. She will be missed and remembered fondly by all who knew her, but most of all by her family who knew and loved her best.
 
 
 
 
 
 
We also bid adieu to Buffy, a beautiful Golden Gal, who made her way to that Rainbow Bridge last week, after a good long life.

Buffy was popular with the Littles, where she enjoyed reigning as a benevolent queen whenever she came to visit. We thank her mom for sharing her with us.
 
 
 
 
Our boarding facility has very been busy this year, especially over the holidays and long weekends. Remember to get your boarding requests in early to make sure there's room enough for your pooches. Your boarding requests can be submitted via GingrApp, or you can call us.

Loki, aka Lokarito, Scampers' Senior Statesman at 16, loves his comfy bed. He brings it with him whenever he boards with us.
 
 
 
Boarding Drop Off Times
We ask that boarders be dropped off before noon, although exceptions can be made in case of an emergency.

Arriving at Scampers is very stimulating for your pooches - even after a busy day of adventuring elsewhere - and it takes several hours for the incomers to settle down.

And one stimulated pooch means a whole houseful of stimulated pooches!

One of the reasons that Scampers boarding facilities works well for most of our guests is that the guests are good and tired after a day of playing, roving and sniffing. Of course, a tired dog is a good dog!
 
 
 
 
Our online management system, GingrApp, is cooking along nicely now. All our customers are able to create private and secure logins to make reservations online for boarding and for daycare - whether full day or half day - as well as upload photos and documents, and, for speed and convenience, set up a completely secure credit card on file.

FYI - you can access GingrApp from the "My Account" link at the top right-hand corner of the landing page of Scampers website.
 
 
 
 
Chris Sugarbaker of Cut-N-Run, mobile groomer extraordinaire will make his next bi-weekly visit to Scampers on Tuesday, November 8th. His grooming schedule often fills up, so get your reservations in early, or set up a reservation for Chris' subsequent visit on November 22nd.

If you've created your GingrApp identity, you can set up your reservations now on GingrApp. When you make your daycare reservation, you'll notice the option to select "Additional Services". Choose the service you'd like to add, then confirm by clicking the blue bar on the right, then choose the date (again), and choose from one of the times available.
 
 
 
 
Our friends at PupPod are busily working on improving the way we will be able to offer PupPod brain exercise and fun for your pooches at Scampers.

Give em a quick stroll first, please!
Remember, arriving at daycare is extra-stimulating. We often have pooches empty out in the lobby because they just can't contain themselves any longer!

If you're bringing you pooch into Scampers after a long car ride, please give them a quick toodle around the bushes or pillars before bringing them inside.

Any poops can be delivered to the green garbage cans - if you need a poop bag, just pop in and ask for one!
 
 
 
 
We know how much you love your furbabies - that's why you bring them to Scampers, after all. But please remember that very few dogs require more than two meals per day, and for many, one is enough.

We happily provide meal service for very young puppies who really do need a mid-day meal to support their growing bodies, and for dogs whose veterinarians prescribe a mid-day meal, e.g., dogs on certain medications or who have metabolic, gastric, or intestinal conditions; however, if your pooch is over 6 months old, please do not bring snacks and meals for them.

Frankly, we're having a tough time staffing for the demand lately, and because so many  on our lunch list don't really need a meal, they're reluctant to eat, and our staffers are hand feeding them, coaxing them, singing to them... They really don't need it, honest!

A gentle reminder that Scampers daycare hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday, and our weekend and holiday daycare hours are by appointment only,  9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In the case of an emergency, we are able to make the accommodation for extended stay. Please call us, though, to advise.
 
 
 
 
Canine Nosework Classes at Scampers
 
 
 
 
Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and an inborn desire to hunt. The sport of K9 Nose Work is designed to develop the natural scenting abilities of your dog by using their passion for hunting and their love of toys, food and exercise.  

It's a great class for your dog to have fun, build confidence, and burn lots of mental and physical energy and you get to find out just how good your dog's nose is.
